The Eden Project
In the Summer of 2004 we visited the Eden Project in Cornwall, UK, and are pleased to share its vision with you here.
The message on the entrance gate alone is enough to inspire one to jump on board. It's actually displayed on the Eden Project's website, but I actually crouched down to write it out on a scrap of paper myself as I walked in, knowing that one day I would wish to share it with people to inspire them also.
"If you believe there should be a place...
... that celebrates life and puts champagne in the veins
...is all about education but doesn't feel like school
...to hold conversations that might just go somewhere
... where research isn't white coats in secret but shared exploration to help us all
...that is a sanctuary for all who think the future too precious to leave to the few - because it belongs to us all.
Then welcome
That's why we built this place and that's where the money goes."
The Eden Project
The living theatre of plants and people
A fascinating world of biomes (vast greenhouses) displays plants, crops and landscapes as part of an educational and visionary leadership philosophy of sustainable business.
"The Warm Temperate Biome, the largest conservatory in the world, is 240 m long, 110 m wide and 50 m high. It contains over 1,000 plant species, which have shot up since they were planted (from September 2000 on), and we’ve lost less than 5%. There is an exit point at the Malaysian House (H.03), a cool room in West Africa (H.04) for emergencies, and seats and water fountains to keep you comfortable on your way round."
The Mission of The Eden Project is 'To promote the understanding and responsible management of the vital relationship between plants, people and resources leading to a sustainable future for all'.
And how is this, detailed in the quote below, also from their Mission Statement, for a wonderful achievement and expression of collective human potential. Talk about teamwork and leadership without title!
"Eden is not for sale, it belongs to everyone. The Trust is unique in that it has deliberately set out to operate in the commercial arena. This is because we believe that only by demonstrating that ethical commerce is viable that we can affect real change in the global businesses that we would like to influence. We started locally with more than 200 suppliers and in our first year of trading put around £150 million of additional revenue into the local economy and have laid the foundations for concerted strategic action among our suppliers to deliver social and environmental benefits such as Waste Neutral."
There is so much going on to list, as you will see on the Eden Project's website, so we will leave you with the website address link below for now.
Best wishes,
James Blacker, 17th May 2006.
