Overview Of Emotional Intelligence
So what is Emotional Intelligence, or E.I.? The paragraph below taken from Emotional Intelligence.co.uk gives us a brief overview and history of E.I.
"Emotional Intelligence (EI) first came to the world’s attention in the mid 1990s with Dan Goleman's groundbreaking books 'Emotional Intelligence' and 'Working with Emotional Intelligence' - Goleman highlighted the importance of Emotional Intelligence in the workplace, showing how it can be used to predict performance and to identify high achievers."
And interestingly, they conclude that...
"We find that most people have the potential to behave with emotional intelligence, but that so much of the time we do not, because of our interferences – internal interferences mostly resulting from false beliefs and limiting habits adopted (for what were then good reasons) in childhood, and retained, unwittingly, in adulthood. The process of enabling someone to develop their emotional intelligence therefore consists in helping them to identify and dismantle, or at least to learn to manage, these interferences."
So, as we would expect, and true to the tenet of 'what is possible for one person is possible for everyone', anyone can develop their Emotional Intelligence.
Emotional Intelligence.co.uk then go on to observe;
"So, for us, emotional intelligence is not a synonym for personality; it is about how we manage our personality."
Another resource in EI that looks interesting is the EIQ16 self-assesment tool. Note: we have yet to experience this oursleves.
"The EIQ16 assesses your EQ (emotional quotient) based on sixteen emotional competencies covering four key areas: Perceiving Emotions, Facilitating Thought, Understanding Emotions and Managing Emotions."
There appears to also be online courses by vision2learn available in Emotional Intelligence to those in the UK who qualify. These may be free as they are funded by the Learning and Skills Council. See 'vision2learn: Emotional Intelligence Online Course' below.
"When I think of the person I would like to be at work, I imagine someone who’s really sorted and in control. The sort of person that communicates well, solves problems and makes the right decisions. The sort of person that I could really respect." - The Emotional Intelligence Course
